A detailed history, examination, blood tests and imaging may be needed. The urgency and test sequence depend on symptoms and previous findings.
Possible procedures
Some patients may need specialised imaging, endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP or referral to a multidisciplinary team. A consultation determines the appropriate next step.
Seek urgent care
Severe persistent upper abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, breathing difficulty, fever or jaundice with acute illness needs urgent assessment.

Does every pancreatic concern need ERCP?+
No. ERCP is generally considered when endoscopic treatment of a duct problem may be needed.
Can gallstones affect the pancreas?+
A stone passing into the shared drainage area can sometimes trigger pancreatic inflammation.
Are symptoms enough for a diagnosis?+
No. Pancreatic symptoms overlap with many conditions and require appropriate testing.
