Associated symptoms
Dark urine, pale stools, itching, abdominal pain, fever, nausea or weight loss may accompany jaundice. Tell the doctor when symptoms began and which medicines or supplements you use.
How it is investigated
Assessment may include examination, blood tests and imaging. Additional tests depend on whether the pattern suggests liver inflammation, bile-flow obstruction or another cause.
Possible bile-duct treatment
When a bile-duct blockage is confirmed, ERCP or another procedure may be considered. Not every case of jaundice is treated endoscopically.
When it is urgent
Jaundice with fever, severe pain, confusion, fainting, bleeding, repeated vomiting or rapid deterioration needs urgent care.

It is a sign with several possible causes. Testing is needed to identify the underlying problem.
Can stones cause jaundice?+
A stone blocking the bile duct can cause jaundice, but many other causes exist.
Does every patient need ERCP?+
No. ERCP is used for selected duct problems when intervention is likely to help.
