Bowel preparation matters

A clear view depends on careful bowel preparation. Follow the exact diet, fluid and laxative instructions supplied by your clinical team. Discuss all medicines, health conditions and previous reactions before the procedure.

03

During and after colonoscopy

A flexible colonoscope is gently advanced through the bowel while the lining is viewed on a monitor. Sedation may be offered. Bloating or cramping can occur for a short time afterwards, and you will receive personalised recovery instructions.

04

When to seek urgent help

Contact urgent medical services for severe or increasing abdominal pain, fever, persistent vomiting, breathing difficulty, heavy rectal bleeding, dizziness or fainting after a colonoscopy.

FAQ

Questions patients often ask

Why is bowel preparation important?+

Some polyps may be removed during the same procedure when it is safe and clinically appropriate.

Will I need someone to take me home?+

If sedation is planned, you will generally need a responsible adult and must follow the unit's driving and supervision instructions.
